Spring Cleaning Tips for Your Church
The weather is warmer, the days are longer, and the flowers around your church are probably near full bloom. As spring draws near, many churches begin
preparing for Easter services and increase the number of programs and people over the next few months.
After the cold winter months, it’s a great time for your church operations team or staff to do a little “spring cleaning!” So take some time over
the next few weeks to tackle these things around your church.
Inspect Fire Prevention Devices
Your smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and sprinkler systems are crucial in protecting your church and members from harm. Take time and
inspect each smoke and carbon monoxide detector to ensure they’re working correctly and change batteries if needed.
Ensure your sprinkler system is on and there are no leaks. It’s recommended to have a sprinkler professional come annually to test your system for any malfunctions.
Test fire alarms and determine if you have an appropriate number of fire extinguishers. Don’t forget to check the expiration date!
Inspect Church Grounds
The property around your church is one of the primary locations that hazards are prevalent. Be sure to inspect your church grounds to identify
trip and fall hazards. See if tree limbs need to be trimmed or if a branch could fall in high traffic areas during bad weather. Look for loose stones,
rocks, or walkways that could cause someone to trip.
Inspect handrails to ensure they’re secure and safe. Proper outdoor lighting is essential for evening activities, so check bulbs or install new lights if needed.
Check sump pumps in crawl spaces and basements. It’s important to know they’re operating correctly if water enters those areas. And make sure basements are securely
locked to prevent children or anyone who could harm themselves from accessing the space.
Perform Maintenance on Your HVAC
As temperatures rise, your HVAC system will operate more often and for extended periods. Check it to ensure it’s clear of any vegetation and working properly. If your
unit is several years old, consider having an HVAC company inspect it to see if any maintenance is needed. It’s much better to address those problems during spring than in the heat of summer.
Prep Your Play Areas
Spring means your children’s ministry will spend more time outside. And as summer approaches, they’ll be on the playground often during vacation Bible schools and other programs. Look for
any play equipment that needs to be replaced or repaired. And place signage that indicates this play area is for church members only.
